Broken Laptop

I am the worst blogger ever and I am sorry.

My laptop has broken on me and being the technology retard that I am I don't know how to fix it, so am in the process of begging others to help me. How are you posting now, you ask? I am on my blackberry! If this works, and posts, then I shall copy up every note taken in the past few weeks and get it blogged (and just add pictures and stuff later). Until then, sincerest apologies for my tardiness, keep your fingers crossed for my poor little laptops' life, and if I do, by some chance miracle, have any readers: stay tuned! I have a backlog of exciting posts to put a smile on your faces!

From a very sad,
Jess.

"If Kafka Worked for Nike"

Today, I am buzzing with happiness! Nothing will wipe this smile from my face! Why am I so cheery you wonder? I'll tell you! Paragraph Planet have published my 75 word story as story of the day on their site!!

HOORAYYYY!!!

I am even more overjoyed by how they described the tale on twitter - "If Kafka worked for Nike. Jessica Cooke, recent #flf11 winner writes the surreal 'My trainers keep talking to me" Smile. Smile. Smile.

When I first discovered the site I sat and read through every story, each one fantastic by the way, and endeavoured to do one myself. I absolutely adore short/flash fiction, but this was one hell of a challenge, one which I thoroughly enjoyed none the less.

Go on and try it! If not check out the site and see if there is a writing group near you, or just go and have a read of all the stories (even mine if you should feel so inclined hehe). It's a brilliant site and it deserves your attention.

My head is now hurting with excitement. I best depart!

Websites You Need To See!

Here are a few websites that are home to some absolutely incredible stories and some that are devoted to getting writers known and spreading their love for all things literary:

Stories based all over Manchester are innovatively displayed as little clouds on a map of the city.

An incredible site dedicated to extreme flash fiction, they publish one (exactly) 75 word story every day. It is harder than some of the authors make it look, give it a try!

Previously known as blue-eyed boy bait; a lovely little magazine that has a different theme for each issue, they are connoisseurs of ‘word joy’ of both poetry and prose.

A project run by one of my old university professors Gill James. Their vision is to have a creative café in every café in every city, town, and airport to give coffee lovers everywhere an extra helping of literary goodness with their drinks.

A space for creative people to show and share their blog posts and projects with other creative types.

I will keep mini-posting websites inbetween bigger posts with all kinds of literary websites that I think are noteworthy! I insist that you have a look at at least one of them, if not all! You won't regret it!

My Very First Blog (Ever!)

Hello everyone, no one, and you at the back. Let me first begin with the story of how I came up with the name of my blog....

My bestfriend Toni and I were wandering around town some time in 2009 and decided that, seeing as we were poor and the clothes shops had nothing of interest in, we would go to the museums. After a while of perusing the exhibits in Manchester Museum we stopped off at the gift shop where we discovered a children's book about an elephant that didn't know how to ride a bike ('Sidney The Little Blue Elephant' by Sharon Rentta) and we were instantly intrigued! Toni sat down on the floor while I perched on the edge of a table and proceeded to read her the story; I was no more than three pages in when I looked up to see that I had acquired three more eager listeners; three children. Three random children had been deposited by their parents, in a gift shop, with what (I assume) they thought was a member of staff partaking in story time.

After supressing a laugh I finished the story and received a round of applause (Toni was the instigator of this of course). We quickly gathered our things and rushed out of the gift shop leaving a small crowd of confused people in our wake as we ran away laughing. Ever since I have been obliged (or forced by Toni... I'm kidding, I love it!) to chose a child's book whenever we are in a bookshop and read it to her.

And thus Story Time With Jess was born!

I intend to use this blog as another outlet for my stories, other stories that have either inspired me or that I just think you need in your lives, competitions, and the occasional picture of moustaches (only if I see one that wows me... maybe).

Anyway, enough from me for now, until next time!
Jess.

Oh and don't worry; Sidney did indeed learn how to ride his bike (with help from mouse, frog and hippo friends - who else!) but alas, we haven't gathered any crowds since though... maybe I'm losing my touch?
